Mid-Atlantic Association of IB World Schools

University Recognition and Admissions Symposium

September 16, 2010 - Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

The Mid-Atlantic Association of International Baccalaureate World Schools (IB-MA) is holding a symposium designed to benefit college and university officials involved in the higher education of the Mid-Atlantic’s most promising youth.  At this symposium, invitees will learn how to attract, retain, and support the best and brightest 21st-century learners.

IB students are inherently high-achieving and broad-minded; they emerge from the IB Diploma Program as well-rounded, globally-minded, independent thinkers.  They are the students whom colleges and universities clamor for.  As Jay Matthews, education writer for the Washington Post, noted, these high school students are “succeeding at the kinds of scholarly research that master’s degree candidates tackle.”

The issue of college and university AP and IB exam results and credit policies has received significant media attention over the years.  Over seventeen states and most recently Virginia have adopted legislation that addresses IB and AP college credit policies.  In addition, many private colleges have updated their credit policies to reflect changes occurring throughout the country.  Some current IB credit policies send the unintended message that an IB education is inferior to its AP counterpart.  At this symposium you will learn how other states, colleges and universities have addressed this issue, and you will be provided with curricular and assessment resources to assist you with your efforts in evaluating your University’s current policies.

The featured speakers at the symposium are:

    • Drew Deutsch, Director of the International Baccalaureate Americas
    • Sandra Wade-Pauly, University and Government Liaison, International Baccalaureate Americas
    • Paul Campbell, Head of Regional Development, International Baccalaureate Americas
    • Michele Sandlin, Director of Admissions, Orgeon State University
